About Rivian

Rivian is an American electric vehicle automaker and automotive technology company founded in 2009. Rivian is building an electric sport utility vehicle (SUV) and pickup truck on a "skateboard" platform. These vehicles are designed for both on-road and off-road driving. Their mission is “to keep the world adventurous forever” through the development of clean-energy vehicles able to withstand tough terrain. Rivian Automotive is paving the way that we travel while saving the planet. By creating emission-free vehicles, Rivian is revolutionizing the adventure and outdoor industry, while making a lasting difference.

Design and Operation of Rivian:

Rivian is an environmentally friendly company as their battery packs are designed to be easily removed from vehicles and either recycled or used in applications such as stationary storage. The interiors of their vehicles are made from 100% animal-free materials with mid-life repairability, and end-of-life recyclability planned into the design. Dunnage containers at their plant are reusable and made from plastics harvested from the ocean. Rivian hopes to achieve carbon neutrality by 2028 by working on more sustainable raw material supply to manage waste generation.

Opportunities

Rivian is a new company entering into a still new industry. An electric car manufacturer similar to Tesla, Rivian is still in its baby years, taking its time to have all the pieces together to launch a truly successful company. Their goal is to create a vehicle that runs on clean energy and is capable of off-road exploring. It has boundless opportunities for growth and will need quality talent, that shares in their vision, to capitalize on those opportunities. It is also helpful that Rivian is based right in the heart of Bloomington-Normal, a perfect location for Illinois State University graduates to start their career.

Rivian's New Shop

It was recently announced the opening of a new EV training facility at Heartland Community College. equipment donated by Rivian is being used by the students there to educate and train them on clean energy storage and capability. The program will help to increase the knowledge and skill in the developing EV market.

Reviews

What Employees are saying about the company: (Glassdoor Reviews)

5.0 ★★★★★

Diverse, great working environment, good benefits, frequent communications from senior management. Feels like you are doing something good for the world and the company cares about you.

5.0 ★★★★★

I have been here for around 2 months now. So far, I like it. Everyone I have met or talked to is friendly, helpful, and smart. I am getting to learn some new technologies and tools. So far I have learned one thing, which is that since I have to build everything from scratch, this helps me in understanding the basic fundamentals of the technology and frameworks which were abstracted in the previous company that I worked at. I also have a good work life balance and so do the people around me.

Only con to the company is that since it is a startup. They don't have all the tools and processes that big organizations have. But that's not a big deal. I get to bring some ideas from my past experiences to form these processes and the team is open and welcoming about them too!

4.0 ★★★★

Everyone is aligned for the company mission and have not seen any office politics. Great people and great teams. Leaders (Management) are very hands on and are super in touch with ongoings and always jump in to help.

4.0 ★★★★

Fun and thorough onboarding experience. Very open and communicative culture with an emphasis on transparency, trust, and inclusion. Awesome product and company vision. A genuinely mission driven company which takes action to meet it ecological responsibilities (working towards a sustainable future is more than just lip service here, it's built into an increasing number of decisions and processes). Opportunities to work directly with decision makers and earn personal recognition from leaders of varying levels. Company frequently updates policies to remain competitive and desirable to employees. i.e., recently got rid of 1yr cliff and annual vesting for RSU's. Now there is no cliff and shares vest quarterly.

3.0 ★★★

High potential paired along with a great product. Some highly skilled, smart, and driven people in the company. It does have super long hours, (60-80+ hrs week) which can end up being very exhausting. The work-life balance is not as great as it can be.
